KrawlZoneRC: Aluminum-equipped Axial EXO
Disclaimer: I realize that Trophy Trucks do not have independent suspensions, I have a Yeti Score for the scale Trophy Truck experience.
Got it home and the previous owner had built this thing for serious speed. He had a Tekin RX8 with a 2400kv 1:8th scale Castle Creations motor. I yanked the electronics, replaced the chassis tub, cleaned the parts and fixed any of the little ghetto mods that the previous owner had done. Then I found some Boomracing EVO 1.9 beadlocks wheels from ATees.com that had the look and backspacing I need for this Truck.
I cut out and fit the HPI Ivan Stewart Mini Trophy Truck body. I also swapped Boom Racing Evo wheels because the 6 lug wheels belonged with the Toyota body and mounted up the Boom Racing MT2 Tires. Loving this look.
When I set it down, I found out the front was a little too soft, so I swapped out the stock EXO springs for some firmer Axial Yeti Trophy Truck King Racing springs. I also installed an Exo sway bar out back to keep the rear wheels planted, might end up getting the front sway bar as well. Then I received a nice size package of aluminum from good folks at ATees and I didn’t waste time getting them all bolted up. Steering took up most of the time due to me losing the servo saver spring for a few minutes.
Aluminum parts are TopCad rear bumper, GPM rear chassis brace, rear shock tower, front chassis brace, rear suspension arms, rear axle carrier, motor mount, steering assembly and Boom Racing front suspension arms. I'm going to hate to scratch it up!
A few days later, I received some more aluminum from the awesome guys at ATees. This Exo is looking too pretty to drive but rest assured, it will be overpowered and will see plenty of drive time! Aluminum parts from the second batch included GPM mid and front cage brace, front chassis brace, front shock tower, c-hubs, steering arms, servo mount, electronics box, TopCad aluminum center chassis assembly.
I also installed some carbon fiber camber links as well from a place up in Canada called Hy-Impact Links. Love these because I’m a carbon fiber addict and they’re super beefy and use some nice rod ends, I’m looking forward to see how they hold up! I then got Axial’s rebranded Castle Creations Mamba Monster from my Yeti XL and the 2400KV 1415 motor installed. It had a really tight fit but I made it work. Also installed a Savox 1258 servo to keep the front wheels straight under the insane power.
After finally reaching the light at the end of the tunnel, and mounting up the rear fenders, I took it out for a quick run up and down the street and realized that the soft crawler 1.9” tires looked like they were going to fly right off the beadlocks, I switched to some Duratrax Six Pack SC wheels and tires with a Traxxas Slash 2wd front wheel offset. I think the black wheels with the white lettering really sets off the Desert Trophy truck look I was going for. I also included the HPI Racing Mini Desert Trophy Truck with the same body as the Exo in the pics since this truck is the one that gave me the inspiration for this build.
I have to thank ATees Hobbies for sponsoring just about every aspect of this build and helping me out along the way. I also have to thank Hy-Impact links that supplied the awesome carbon fiber links. Last but not least, Axial Racing, you need to bring this RC back because the platform is amazing and there’s soo much you can do with it! Make sure to check out my Facebook page here.
