RC Basics: Different Types of RC Cars

Buggies are designed for off-road racing and are originally based on its full-scale equivalents that are commonly found on desert racing. There are usually two categories, 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive, which can easily be distinguished visually by the wheels size. It is really popular today because it has a good mix of both on-road and off-road capabilities. In other words, buggies can usually reach high speeds and still jump hills or dirt piles with ease.

Short Course Trucks are growing more popular nowadays and features strong durability so that it has been used widely for competitive racing and bashing.

Monster trucks are also great for off-road bashing, mudding and can drive over almost anything. Excellent bashing applications and they're practically indestructible.

Stadium trucks are a cross between a monster truck and a buggy. It is usually rear wheel drive and keeps extremely low to the ground. The wheels and tires of a stadium truck are very large in diameter. The idea behind this is to increase ground clearance and improve its handling and stability. Its name is derived from its full-scale counterpart, which is designed to run on a temporary off-road track built on a stadium field.

Crawlers are a kind of off-road vehicle that was made to overcome difficult terrain. Commonly seen is the rock crawler. Rock crawlers are primarily four-wheel drive with various upgrades for improved performance and durability, such as locking differentials, upgraded suspension and roll cage. In these cases, the crawler is required for slow-speed, precision driving and high torque that is generated through large gear reductions in the drivetrain.

  • Scale Crawlers are scale models made for going over difficult terrain while maintaining a realistic appearance. It is generally made for crawling and trailing. These are incredibly popular at the moment.
  • Comp Crawlers refers to the crawler for competition and in this case, time and speed are factors. These beasts usually have incredible flex, but they don't look very scale.

  • Rock Racers refers to the car that can race on rocky terrain. Rock racing evolved from rock crawling competitions that we just mentioned above that focus on time and speed. Suspension is very important for rock racers, as they need high speed combined with incredible suspension action during rocky portions of the course.

Drift cars are usually electric powered and provide very technical excitement. Drawing the perfect line on a drift course at a parallel angle is hard to do perfectly. Drift cars are usually made to look as scale as possible.

Touring car always rides very low to the ground and it can reach incredibly fast speeds. Some people might think that drift cars and touring cars are simila. Actually you can tell the differences from their tires, rear diffs and also chassis. A drift car is easier to lock the rear diff while a touring car needs to open the rear diff back up.

Semi-Trailers are a trailer without a front axle and semi-trailer truck is the combination of a tractor unit and one or more semi-trailers to carry freight. Some common semi-trailers in the RC world are 1/14 scale and an example is the Knight Hauler. These are made to look as realistic as possible, but requires a lot of work.

Generally speaking, on-road cars are heavily focused on speed and precision, while the off-road cars, including monster trucks, stadium trucks, short course trucks, buggies, rock crawler, are packed with many types of vehicles that can traverse all kinds of terrain. Off-road vehicles are designed and built to be extremely tough to handle harsh terrain and you can drive them nearly everywhere. Therefore, the off-road vehicles are typically the best option as your first RC car, regardless of whether you want to enter competitive racing or just backyard bashing. However, this does not necessarily mean that one is definitely better than the other, but you need to ask yourself what interests you more.
