RC Basics: Clean Your Bearings For Maximum Performance
Some people, such as myself when I first started the hobby, drive their cars into hell and back without thinking about the consequence. I never looked at my bearings as a point of interest because they were so small that they seemed insignificant. However, as I learned more and more, it became apparent that bearings are more important than meets the eye. They influence the speed and performance that you get when driving your RC. A nice, clean bearing in tip-top condition can make or break your driving results. Be sure to clean them! Here are some steps to clean them easily!
Let's talk about equipment first. Some people who do off-road enjoys replacing their bearings every time they hear crunches or feel that there are small grits in the bearings. That's fine if you have a source of bearings at a low price. However, for on-road cars, or if you race often, you probably run a full set of bearings that you try to keep in good condition for as long as possible, as a good set of bearings can last you for a long time. All you need to maintain your bearings is any RC motor spray, safety goggles, some rags, light bearing oil, and RPM's Bearing Blaster.
First up, grab your dirty bearings, and place it in the middle of your Bearing Blaster unit. If you'd like, you can remove the seal from your bearings just for that extra level of cleanliness. The unit actually accepts most wheel/diff/steering/transmission bearings, so you should be good. The bearing should fit comfortably in the center of the bearing blaster. After that, place the other half of the bearing blaster over the base, insert the tube that came with your RC motor spray into the hole on the bearing blaster, and let it rip. Use short bursts of the spray to loosen any materials like dirt and dust off the bearings. Be sure to wear some form of safety goggles, OR try to be careful when spraying into the unit. If your nozzle doesn't sit into the bearing blaster firmly, the motor spray can sometimes spray out if the can has a high pressure nozzle. You do NOT want this stuff in your eyes so be safe when doing this! Continue to do so until all of the residue on your bearing is cleared. When you finish, you can see that the dirt and residue will fall right off the bearing. After that, all you have to do is drop a single drop of bearing oil. I can't stress enough how you SHOULDN'T add too much bearing oil, as it adds drag and is actually harmful to your car.
