Builder of the Month: David Chew (November 2024)

Boom Racing:
Welcome David and thank you for sharing your amazing builds with the Boom community. We heard that you could speak multiple languages. Can you tell us about yourself and your background?

David Chew:
I am lucky to be from a multi-racial country. I am fortunate to have learned how to speak our National language Bahasa Malaysia, English and so do Chinese. Speaks some Chinese dialects too such as Cantonese, Hokkien, and Hakka and so do Sarawak ethnic languages such as Iban and local Sarawakian Malay.

Boom Racing:
How did you get into RC and what was your first RC vehicle?

David Chew:
At a young age, I started my first RC in 1984 and my first RC was Tamiya Honda City Turbo. I continued to collect other brands until I started my hobby shop business, DC Com in Malaysia.

Boom Racing:
How did you discover the Boom Racing brand?

David Chew:
I found Boom Racing when buying RC products from Asiatees and learned more about it through social media. From there I started carrying the brand on my hobby shop. Then I personally met the guy behind it, Jason at the first RECON G6 in Hong Kong.

Boom Racing:
We had an amazing event in Hong Kong called the Return of the Dragon: Asian Scale Invasion, Recon G6, which you attended. What was your most memorable moment from it?

David Chew:
For 3 consecutive times all filled with joy and happiness. The most memorable moment is to be awarded 3 times Driver Of The Day Senior Class.

Boom Racing:
Your vehicle won the award for Best BRX02 88 Class at the Show 'N' Shine event. Can you tell us more about your vehicle?

David Chew:
All BRX are masterpieces and I knew lots of time and effort put into it and my BRX02 88 is my favorite rig. I brought it to Thailand, the Philippines, and Hong Kong Recon G6 2024. If you look at my 88 rig, I have a special figure there holding a cellphone, I called him Lolo (Grandfather). I think that is what makes it adorable. It was given to me by a good friend in the Philippines who is an artist. I believe you featured him before, Carlo Magno.

Boom Racing:
You got another very special award from Brian Parker. The Driver Of The Day Senior Class! Asian Scale Invasion brought together a diverse group of people: young and old, male and female, from around the world, including Malaysia, Taiwan, and Canada! So, what are your thoughts? Is diversity vital to the future of R/C?

David Chew:
Like any other hobby, having a mixed age makes the community alive. I always enjoy meeting people young and old, and sharing my experiences and RC knowledge is the best thing I can contribute to the community.

Boom Racing:
What's the one tip (when building a new kit & rig) you think everyone should follow?

David Chew:
Read the instruction Mmanual thoroughly before building and have the right tools in hand. If you think that something is not going well while building your rig. Put your tools down, stop your build, and don’t force the issue. Return when you are relaxed and ready to continue your build.

Boom Racing:
Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years in regards to playing RC?

David Chew:
I don’t see myself stopping playing RC. I will continue to play and travel to meet new friends till day 0.

Boom Racing:
Having been in the RC industry for a long time, do you believe that the RC crawling community will continue to grow?

David Chew:
Certainly, it will continue to grow, and in my opinion, RC Crawling has the best community.

Boom Racing:
And finally...What final words of wisdom do you have for the rest of the Boom community to fire them up and inspire them into an epic build of their own?

David Chew:
Choose what type of RC would you like to play. If you are into RC Crawling, select the best brands that are available in the market, such as Boom Racing. For me, it’s best to spend money as long as you are getting a quality product and most of all, take time and enjoy each moment while you are building your kit.
